New Edition. New Tactics

Hey guys I have been hearing a lot of negitivity on the internet about the new edition not being that great and that it has become a rich mans hobby and that 5th edition tactics do not work in 6th. Well guess what they wont.

I been listening about in blogs, forums and youtube and Fritz came up with the best tip I think I know and I can pass onto you guys which is treat 6th edition as a whole new game. Which is a fantastic way of putting things because you take your tactics from 5th and it will help you with tactics for 6th.

A few of my personal favorite new rules are the duels, grenades being used versus MC's, and the new flyer rules are well thought out.

Give the game a go before you criticize too.. nothing worse than hating something you already tried.

Also my last game on 5th.. loss to Tyranids of all races...

A pic...

So new 6th ed tactics to come.

Scout Tactica

Scouts are a troop selection in the Space Marine codex. They can have a wide range of uses and roles within any Space Marine army. They come in many different builds to give them a very good role. In this article I will be discussing their different uses and how I use them in my army.

Long Range

This is probably the best role for scouts. With this type of unit go large or not at all. The Ballistic Skill (BS) is only 3 which makes it hard to shoot down anything with just 5 scouts. To compensate with their low BS I equip them with sniper rifles and one heavy bolter with hellfire shells. This guarantee's on anything from a grot or a high toughness creature that you will wound it on a 4+ and rend on a 6 with the sniper rifles and more importantly the heavy bolter will wound on a 2+. This unit now has a solid role in killing high toughness creatures. In previous experience I have seen ten man squads take out the Nightbringer and completely destroys Daemon Princes. Also because the unit is a troops choice it can just sit on an objective in a building. The camo cloaks are a must with this unit. Instead of the regular 4+ save you will add one to your role which means it is effectively a 3+ save. If you have a techmarine or Lysander in your army, you can bolster the building so then your scouts have a 2+ cover save. The last good thing is the sniper rifles have pinning so if a unit takes a unsaved wound, they need to take a leadership test, if they fail, cant do anything next turn. This can be a really good thing to cause on a unit which is not fearless and units that have big fire power such as a devastator squad. The big thing to be aware of with this unit is flamers and heavy flamers. They ignore cover and can potentially ruin your day. This risk can be seriously reduced by taking Telion in a squad. An article on Telion is to come.

Two ten man squads on one objective firing at the same target is a hard defense to push off an objective. Nothing other than tanks should get through. This is where short range scouts can come in handy

Short range

Expect the scouts to die and they will supprise you. I recommend having an all-round use and only taking 5 in a squad. Due to their 4+ armour save these do not have the survivability of a tactical squad. An all round lineup would be 1 Missile Launcher, the other normal guys have combat blades and the sargent has a powerfist. This allows the following tactical options such as infiltrate to the side armour of a tank, outflank onto an objective, and also using teleport homers to assist a deep striking army. The combat knives total up to a semi decent amount of close combat attacks.

Overall Scouts are underrated in my opinion and most space marine armies could find a very good use for them. My description of them is they are the special forces and if played correctly are a troop choice to be chose above tactical squads.

A basic scout based list.

Captain, 2x 10man scout sniper squads, 4x 5man scout squads, 2x Venerable Dreadnoughts in drop pods, 1x thunderfire cannon in drop pod. TOTAL:1750

New Project: IC hobby Progress Challenge

Hey guys I have entered the Inependent Characters Hobby Progress Challange. This is primaraly focused on the non gaming side which is a good thing. I always stress an army should be painted before playing it on the battlefield. There is not a lot worse in my opinion than after you have spent hours on your models that your oponent turns up with grey models.

Anyway off the rant. The army I have chose to build is Raven Guard the requirments are that the army should be 1850 and have at least a 400 point sideboard which doesn't have to be fitted into force org etc etc...

The List is as follows.

Raven Guard "Glass Hammer" 1850

HQ
Shike

Chaplian with Jump Pack

Troops

10man Tactical Squad

10man Tactical Squad

10man Tactical Squad
5 man Scout Squad

Fast Attack

5 man Venguard Veteran Squad (Lightning Claw, Storm Shield, Jump Packs)

10 man Assault Squad

10 man Assault Squad

Dedicated Transports

3x Drop Pods

The list itself is completly different to what I have ever played before. I normally play mech or Terminators so I left both of them out. I nicknamed the army glass hammer because it is potentially hard hitting but if you hit the wrong things with the wrong squads the list falls appart. It is also very fast. Very Eldar like...

My Sideboard was very hard to come to a good one but I think I got it.

  • 1-5 Venguard Veterans. Same layout as list. This allows me to expand further than 1850

  • Shadow Captain Karvydae. Forge World model which allows Assault Marines to be troops if the army has one Scout Squad

  • 2 x 10 man Assault Squads. These can be added in as troops in replacement of the tactical squads.
I have a link t0 the thread on the forum which is www.theindependentcharacters.com/forums/viewtopic.php.?f=52&t=1865&start=10
The details of the list, tactics, and logic behind my list choices will be revealed in due course.

My first Article will be on Scouts and how you can possibly use them in your Space Marine Lists.

My First 1750 army. A good playtest Army?

This article is to talk about my first 1750 40K army I collected Space Marines. This army has been to a few competitions and has had a 3rd place at 750 points. This army was chosen from buying the assault on Black Reach box set and built up to be a fine collection.

The question now is what do I do with this army now I have played it a lot of times and moved on from this list. It is quite simple. Use it as a playtest army for future armies.

How many times have you built an army and then got to games or tournaments and realised the army does not fit to suit? I know I have had this with my Necrons and it leads to having models that you do not use. A good alternative? Have an army which contains most types of units and copies the trend in 5th edition and get a friend to play out a game against your army list using spare models or even better models of a simular size to test how the army will work against different scenarios.

The Space Marine list I have above contains: A average HQ plain basic Captain, A 'death star' unit (terminators in a Land Raider), Deep Striking Units (Drop Pod, Dreadnought), Transports, and Infeltrating Scout Units. This will allow me think. How will my army deal with each scenario covered. My Imperial Guard Army was built with this in mind and also my project armies (Eldar and Raven Guard) are all playtested against this list.

Thought I would post this on here as a little suggestion of what you can do with armies that you have maybe sitting around gaining dust.

Do you think this list is a good playtest army? Comment bellow...
